Interesting article. I can't help feeling that innovation always comes against tried and tested solutions that drive formulaic answers to the fore. How many times have we heard clients using Microsoft software interfaces as the de facto bible for any interface design problems due to their ubiquitous reach. Are we forever enslaved to follow the masses regardless of it's effectiveness? It's a difficult question to answer as some solutions require little effort to understand, whereas some require much thought before it becomes intuitive. Driving a manual car (you Yanks will have to come across the pond to experience this) is a great example of the necessity for the user to invest time in an interface before being as one with their machine.
